Explore this miraculous geographical site that consists of a number of tourism activities and natural heritage sites. Located some 25km inland of Port Shepstone, the Oribi Gorge Reserve sits at the head of the iconic river gorge lined with dense coastal bush and forests. The reserve is carved out of ancient sandstone over millions over years, with a wealth of wildlife species. Oribi Gorge is also a wonderful birding destination with more than 250 species recorded.

Petrified Forest & kayaking

Petrified Fossil forest reefs and beach caves
Explore this stretch of coastline from the Wild Coast Sun known as the Mzamba Fossil Formations. The reefs and caves are lined with petrified trees, amenities, giant clams, turtles and ancient shells dating from about 85 million years ago. Other activities on offer are paddle boats, segway scooter and quad bike tours.

Kayaking Umzimkulu Port Shepstone
For a magical experience for beginner, intermediate or advanced kayakers, explore the phenomenal Umzimkulu river. Umzimkulu means big home or large place in Zulu and the river, appropriately named, is home to turtles, jellyfish, lizards and a variety of bird life. Paddle the waters in a kayak or stand up board, be it dusk or dawn, for a scenic, once in a lifetime experience.

Red Desert Nature Reserve

The desert consists of red soil beneath which has been found archaeological artefacts dating back millions of years. Best described as a miniature version of the Arizona Desert, the man high hills and valleys of naked red soil bare stark contrast to the surrounding lush and subtropical vegetation. Archeological artifacts’ going back millions of years can be found and the locals are pleased that this is now an internationally protected heritage site. A 30 minute archaeological talk followed by a guided walk through the desert and optional waterfall trail is available on arrangement.

Umtamvuna Nature Reserve
Explore the numerous trails that the Umtamvuna Nature reserve has on offer, from extreme boulder climbing, to the waterfall, a leisurely walk on the rim overlooking the river, boat rides, as well as an incline walk through the forest. Many indigenous plants can be seen throughout the year as well as a variety of bird life.

Explore the hub of ocean activities that offer many fun boat rides and activities! Conquer the waves and keep an eye out for marine life such as dolphins, whales and flying fish. One can also Scuba dive or cage dive in Protea Banks or go deep sea fishing, the opportunities are endless. One can also glide over the ocean in a spectacular scenic microlight flight should weather conditions permit. A true adventurer's delight!
