Surfing

in paradise

The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast is not only a top surfing spot for South Africans, but this ‘point break heaven’ attracts surfers from around the globe. It’s almost impossible to find a beach that doesn’t offer great surfing opportunities, but certainly some of the top surf spots include Shelly Beach, St Michael’s-on-Sea, Scottburgh, Southbroom, Margate, Port Edward and Lucien Beach. But the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast is not only for seasoned surfers, there are many brilliant surf schools that will teach everyone with a need to surf in as little as five lessons.
The 120km stretch of coastline offers countless world class waves along its golden beaches as well as those hidden in the many coves blessed by glassy lagoons and palm trees. With some of the best surfing spots in the world, the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast offers visiting families the perfect opportunity to ‘hang 10’. There are many establishments that hire out surfboards as well as kitesurfing equipment for those seeking something different. Some of the most popular beaches to try include Scottburgh, Umzumbe, Lucien, Southbroom and Port Edward. The Indian Ocean's water is warm all year round, although a short spring suit might be required for the occasional colder winter morning. For surfing, the best time of the year to visit would be during the winter months, between May and August when the coastline gets very consistent swell and light offshore winds blow almost every morning.
